At King’s, we define considerate communications as respectful ways of working and studying with all those in our community to improve our own and others’ wellbeing. We ask you to be professional in your communications, whether in person or online, and mindful of others’ time, privacy and personal circumstances.

The way that we each communicate at King’s can have a powerful impact on how we are perceived by others and how others respond to us. Mutually respectful communications across the whole community can also help to reduce stress and contribute positively to making our own and other’s workloads more manageable.

We ask you to follow this guidance to ensure that your communications are always inclusive, accessible, and respectful.

How can we communicate considerately?

  • Communicate in the clearest and most effective way possible so that all recipients easily understand our messages.
  • Be mindful of tone, as this can be easily misinterpreted, especially in online communications.
  • Be mindful of others in the community who may have different work or studying patterns to us and have reasonable expectations around their response time.
  • Hold ourselves accountable by letting people know as soon as possible of any changes to meetings or events, including our attendance.
  • Respect each other’s work- and study-loads and do our best not to add undue stress to others.
  • Contribute positively and constructively to discussions, taking time to prepare and follow-up any tasks, as required.

Report + Support
If you have any concerns about others’ communication, use the university’s dedicated online space Report + Support which allows staff, students and visitors to report concerns or request access to support. Report + Support also provides guidance and information articles about bullying, harassment, hate incidents or sexual or physical violence, as well as information about the options and support available.
