LC: Applying for a non-assessed Postgraduate-only (PG-O) language course

• Develop practical language skills for academic, everyday and professional communication.

• Build confidence in speaking, listening and reading in the target language.

• Study alongside your postgraduate degree in a supportive, non-assessed format.

• Learn a new language and explore a new culture through an engaging and interactive setting.

• For King's postgraduate students, these courses are offered free of charge. 

Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. 

Courses are available at beginner and intermediate level, depending on the language.  

Beginner courses are offered across the full range of languages listed above and are suitable for students with no prior experience.

Intermediate courses are currently available in French and Spanish only and are designed for students with some existing knowledge of the language.

An additional Introduction to Beginners French course is also available.  

Beginner and intermediate courses are delivered through weekly in-person classes supported by independent study.

The Introduction to Beginners combines asynchronous study through self-paced units on KEATS. 

PG-O courses are available to current postgraduate students at King's and open to students from other University of London institutions. Students may enrol on one course only and cannot take a PG-O course if they are already registered on an assessed language module.

It is your responsibility to check whether your department allows you to take an additional language course. 

Applications are made through the online application form published on KEATS. Full application steps, enrolment dates and timetable information are provided on the KEATS page. 

Beginner courses are designed for students with no prior knowledge of the language. If you apply for an intermediate course, you will be asked to complete a short language level assessment to help place you in the most suitable class.

Following this assessment, a Language Module may be recommended in some instances where a PG-O course is not the most suitable option, or where a place on an intermediate course is not available. Further information about Language Modules can be found on the relevant course information page. 

• Courses are non-assessed and do not carry academic credit.

• Beginners and Intermediate classes are taught weekly (one 2-hour session per week) in person and supported by independent study.

• An online Introduction to Beginner in French is also available

• Attendance is compulsory, with a minimum attendance requirement of 75%.

• Students who meet the attendance requirements for beginner or intermediate courses receive a certificate. Introduction to Beginners does not lead to a certificate. 

2026/27 fees:

King's postgraduate students studying one Language Module for Award or one PG-only course: free

University of London students: £1,560.00
