Applying for the new Student Visa

Our Student visa interactive guide provides you with a quick and easy overview of the process for applying for a Student Visa. This is for students applying both in and outside the UK.

It is in three parts:

Part 1: General information

  • When and where you can make your application

Part 2: Documents required

  • The documents you need for your application and the financial evidence required

    • The maintenance requirement is increasing on Tuesday 11 November 2025 to £1,529 per month (£13,761 if applying for a period of study longer than 9 months). This isn't reflected in this interactive guide yet. Please read more about upcoming changes on UKCISA News.

Part 3: Completing your application form

  • How to complete your application form

If you're an EU/EEA/Swiss national

Students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland (excluding Ireland) who don't already have a visa that allows study (such as pre-settled/settled status) will need to apply for a Student Visa prior to travelling to the UK.

If your programme of study is more than 6 months in duration, King’s cannot enroll you with a visitor visa. You must apply for a Student Visa first.

Student route ‘Visa brake’: Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan

The UK government has introduced a temporary ‘visa brake’ affecting nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan.

It applies to Student visa applications made from outside the UK on or after 26 March 2026. These applications will be refused, regardless of where they're submitted.

As a result, universities cannot issue a CAS to support applications from affected nationals applying overseas.

Who is not affected?
- You're a dual national and hold a passport from a country not included in the visa brake
- You're already in the UK with a valid visa and meet eligibility requirements to apply for a Student visa from within the UK
- Those applying under other visa routes (except the Skilled Worker route for Afghan nationals)
- You're a current student studying in the UK - your existing visa remains valid.

How long will the visa brake last?
The UK Government has described the measure as temporary, but no end date has been confirmed.

Is the University able to make exceptions to this restriction?
No, universities cannot make exceptions to this government policy. We recognise that this may cause considerable disappointment for applicants from the affected countries who are now unable to take up their offer.
If you're impacted by the visa brake and would like to discuss your options, please contact the Visa and International Student Advice team.

Graduate route
