How do I complete my Occupational Health check?

Courses which require health assessment include:  

• Medicine  

• Dentistry and Dental Hygiene  

• Nursing  

• Midwifery  

• Pharmacy  

• Physiotherapy  

• Nutrition & Dietetics  

• Postgraduate Certificate in Education 

A health assessment will be required if your course involves the following activities:

• Clinical contact with patients 

• Work involving risk of exposure to respiratory sensitisers (e.g., laboratory animals, formaldehyde, wood dust) 

• Work with human tissue products 

• Work with genetically modified organisms or biological agents that are harmful to human health. 

• Work involving risk of exposure to environmental or human pathogens (e.g., studies involving water systems or soils) 

If you need a post offer health assessment, your admissions team will create a referral for you. This assessment must be completed before you start your course.  
 
Once the referral has been created you'll receive an email with instructions on how to complete your online health assessment. It's important to complete this as soon as possible to avoid delays. You should complete as fully as possible, a condition which may have minimal impact on you currently, such as a colour vision deficiency (colour blindness), may have a significant impact when you start studying or are in clinical practice.   
 
Optima Health will review your information and may contact you by phone or invite you to an appointment if they need more details. After determining your fitness to study, they will create a report on the myOH portal and notify admissions that this is available. Your health information is not shared with the university and will be securely held by Optima Health and will only be accessible to them. You can read the Optima Health privacy policy on their website. 

If your course involves clinical contact with patients or risks exposure to blood or body fluids, you'll need an additional fit for placement assessment. Admissions will identify that you need this.

You may be asked to provide evidence of your vaccination status, which you can upload to the portal. If you need additional immunisations, these will be given once you start your course. After you have received the immunisations required, a fit for placement report will be available on the portal and the placement team will be notified. 

Occupational Health assesses you based on your course requirements, standards from the Higher Education Occupational Physicians/Practitioners (HEOPS) group, and relevant health profession governing councils

If you declare a disability, you may be referred to Occupational Health for specialist advice if the admissions team thinks it might significantly impact your ability to complete the program. You can also contact the Disability Support & Inclusion team for advice and support for your studies.
