This article is intended to advise undergraduate Home medical and dental students about the funding options available throughout your studies.

If your home country is Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, contact the Money and Housing Advice Service.

If your home country is England the following guidance applies:

First degree medical and dental students

Years one to four

In years one to four of your degree, you are funded by Student Finance England (SFE).

This means you can receive a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan, as well as any relevant targeted support. For more information about SFE loans, eligibility and entitlement check Student finance for undergraduates: New full-time students - GOV.UK.

If your course lasts longer than 30 weeks and 3 days, you could get extra money included as part of your maintenance loan. This is called a Long Course Loan.

Year five onwards (years counted include any intercalculated years)

In your fifth year of study (not including any repeat years of study), and onwards, you are funded by the NHS.

If you are eligible you can receive:

NHS Tuition Fee Grant

NHS Bursary

Reduced SFE maintenance loan

Intercalculating

Contact the Money and Housing Advice Service to discuss funding and intercalating as this can be a nuanced area to advise on. The funding available to you in this year, and when you return to studying, is dependent on where your intercalation course is, the level of course you attend and the year you choose to do this.

Repeating a year

Important to know: It is year five of your course that you will move to NHS funding, rather than your fifth year of study – if for example you repeat a year of study. Contact the Money and Housing Advice Service if you need to repeat a year at all.
