Why do I have a personal tutor?
Your personal tutor will support your entire academic experience while you’re at King’s. They have vast academic experience and receive training to understand the variety of support options available at King’s, so they will be an invaluable source of guidance as you journey through your degree.
Do postgraduate research students have a personal tutor?
No – personal tutors are only assigned to ‘taught’ students, which are undergraduate and postgraduate taught students. Postgraduate research (PGR) students have instead their Supervisor who fulfils this equivalent role.
For details around this, please refer to the information in Postgraduate Researchers: Getting started.
You can find detailed guidance on personal tutors in Who is my personal tutor & what do they do? and How and when should I meet with my personal tutor?
Who are the senior tutors?

Do personal tutors provide academic references?
Your personal tutor may be asked to provide a reference or speak on your behalf for job, internship or further study applications. To help them give you the best possible support, it’s important to keep in regular contact and update them on your progress, achievements and goals. A tutor can only write a meaningful reference if they know you, so make the most of regular meetings and keep them informed throughout your time at King’s.
If you need a reference, try to give your tutor at least two weeks’ notice where possible. If your Personal tutor is unavailable, the Senior Tutor may be able to provide a reference instead.
Can I have a same gender personal tutor?
Please let your Programme Officer know if a same-gender Personal tutor is preferred.
Can I change my personal tutor?
If you would like to change personal tutor for any reason please contact your Programme Officer who will be able to facilitate this for you.
What are the responsibilities of the personal tutor?
Your Personal tutor is there to offer you pastoral and personal support in the following ways:
- Be a responsible person in whom you can confide.
- Meet with you each term in order to discuss your progress.
- Be available for unscheduled individual consultations which may be carried out in person, by telephone or by email.
- Provide a link between you and the College.
- Assist you in finding solutions to academic and other problems that you feel may affect your life at King's.
- Recommend for you other individuals or services who may be better placed to assist you with a specific problem.
What are my responsibilities as a personal tutee?
You should make use of the support and advice that is available to you in the following ways:
- See your personal tutor whenever you are requested to do so and constructively prepare for these meetings.
- Tell your tutor at an early stage about any problems related to your academic or personal life that you need support in resolving.
- Keep them informed of any ongoing or newly arising academic or other matter that is likely to have a significant affect on your studies.
- Follow up for yourself any advice or guidance given, in particular where you are advised to consult professional services such as welfare or medical agencies (personal tutors cannot set up these appointments for you).
- Act on any advice they give you, especially if you're referred to another support service (your tutor can't make appointments on your behalf).
