How many weeks am I at university and on placement?
You can find this information on your KEATS cohort page, under ‘Programme Plan’.
What are the maximum hours per shift when on placement?
As a nursing student, you can choose not to work long days and have the option to work 7.5 hour day shifts and 10.5 hour night shifts.
- You must not work 4 long days every week to finish your placement early.
- During your placement, you must normally not work more than 11.5 hours per day, exclusive of breaks.
- If you work in placement areas where shifts are longer than 12.5 hours, you can attend for the extended time but do not have to.
More information on rotas and shift patterns is available in your Practice learning handbook.
How can I change my shift when on placement?
To change a shift, contact the lead nurse or the named Practice Supervisor in your placement area when he/she is arranging the rota.
Will I have to work nightshifts?
Yes. Students are expected to experience the range of hours expected of registered professionals, including night shift duties. You will be expected to work night duty to work with your Practice Supervisor, and to comply with NMC requirements.
More information on rotas and shift patterns is available in your Practice learning handbook.
What happens if I’m absent from my placement?
Please inform the Trust of your absence, and also submit an absence notification form via KEATS Practice Learning page to the Pre-registration and Placement teams, and let your placement area know.
If you think your absence will be more than a few days, we recommend contacting your Cohort Lead, who can put together an action plan for you.
If you use the ePAD, you’ll need to record your absence there as well. The length of the absence is the length of the shift you are missing.
To request additional hours, please refer to the process for additional hours, which is available on KEATS and complete a Placement Extension Request form.
What's the process for additional placement hours?
Please discuss with your Cohort Lead and refer to the additional hours request flowchart located on KEATS.
