What are core modules and progression-specific modules?

A core module must be passed at some point in your programme in order for you to finish and receive your award. Therefore, it cannot benefit from compensation or condonement.

However, a core module does not have to be passed in order to progress from one year to the next; it must simply be passed before the end of your studies. Not all programmes have core modules.

Some non-core modules may be compulsory, or may be optional, meaning that you will be able to choose whether you want to study them as part of your programme.

A module being core and progression-specific means that it must be passed in order to progress from one year of study to the next. This will be written into your programme specification.

Undergraduate students who started in the 2022-23 academic year will see modules listed as core or progression-specific in Student Records, when you view your module results.

If your programme has any core modules or any core and progression-specific modules, these will be identified in brackets after the module code alongside your results.
