The modules you take as part of your programme are either core or non-core, and some may also be core and progression-specific. This article will explain the different types of module, and their impact on progression and award.
What are core and non-core modules?
All core modules must be passed at the pass mark in order for you to finish your programme and achieve your award.
All non-core modules must be passed, compensated or condoned in order for you to finish your programme and achieve your award. Non-core modules may be compulsory or optional.
Modules may be 'progression-specific' which means they must be passed, compensated or condoned in order to progress to the next year.
All modules, unless they are progression-specific, can be deferred to the following academic year but must be passed by the end of that year to progress further. For example, a deferred core module from year 1 must be passed or compensated by the end of year 2 to progress to year 3.

What are core and progression-specific modules?
A module being core and progression-specific means that it must be passed in order to progress from one year of study to the next. This will be written into your programme specification.
How can I view my modules in Student Records?
Undergraduate students who started in the 2022-23 academic year will see modules listed as core or progression-specific in Student Records, when you view your module results.
If your programme has any core modules or any core and progression-specific modules, these will be identified in brackets after the module code alongside your results.
