If you discover a fire
- Raise the alarm using one of the break glass points. Please ensure you are familiar with the location of these.
- Dial ext. 2222 [or 6666 at Britannia House] from any Campus telephone and give information about the location of the fire.
- Evacuate.
When it is necessary to evacuate a building in an emergency, the alarm will sound and you should leave the building immediately by the nearest marked emergency exit. Do not use the lifts. To prevent the spread of fire and smoke, please ensure you shut all doors behind you.
On emerging from the building it is vital that you move right away from the building to provide access for emergency vehicles and to allow others to leave quickly too. Provide an example to others and follow the instructions of fire marshals. You may only re-enter the building when the alarms have ceased and on instruction from an Evacuation Marshal or Security.
As students you are also encouraged to report any near misses or accidents on Campus sites, via the safety incident reporting system. You can find guidance on how to report an incident on the Health and Safety services home page.
Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) for students with disabilities
If you ‘re a new student who requires assisted evacuation, you should register with the Disability Support and Inclusion team via Student Records and indicate if you need assistance to leave the building during an evacuation. Discussions can then be had to ensure that appropriate arrangements are put in place and a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) will be issued. The PEEP ensures that those requiring assisted evacuation, whether permanent or temporary, are not put at any disadvantage or treated less favourably in the event of an emergency situation.
Further information regarding Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) can be found on the Estates & Facilities (internal) webpages. Information regarding all College health and safety matters can be found on the Health, Safety and Environmental Protection webpages
