Accessing your account
How do I access my King's email account for the first time?
Important to know:
- Accounts that haven't been registered within 30 days of creation will receive a reminder and will be disabled seven days later if not registered in that time.
- To reactivate a disabled account you will need to contact the IT Service Desk and provide proof of identity.
Your username for your King's email account is your knumber e.g. k1234567@kcl.ac.uk. Visit the Access your email webpage to open the Microsoft Outlook Web App.
Keep your account active
Your King's email address will be used by staff and services across the university to communicate important information to you. As such, remember to check your account regularly.
Inactive accounts are a security risk. You must access your account at least every 90 days by accessing any Microsoft service such as Microsoft Office or any King's IT application.
Important to know:
- Accounts not used for 90 days will receive a reminder and will be disabled 7 days later if they remain unused. To reactivate a disabled account you will need to contact the IT Service Desk.
- To help you keep up-to-date with your King's email account, you may find it helpful to add the account to your smartphone so important emails can reach you quickly.

I'm unable to log in to my IT account using my username and password
I forgot my password to access my IT account, what should I do?
If you have set up Microsoft Self-Service Password reset, then you can visit the Microsoft Online Password Reset webpage to request a password change.
To request a password change:
Enter your username in the format of k1234567@kcl.ac.uk.
You will then receive a verification code to an external (i.e. non-King's) email address that you confirmed when setting up self-service.
If you have any issues with resetting your password, please attach proof of photo ID to an email and send it to 88888@kcl.ac.uk from a personal email address. The IT Service desk will then be able to reset your password for you.
