Depending on your programme of study, you may have the option to select optional modules before you start your first term at King’s.
You’ll receive an email from Student Records or your programmes team when the module selection task is available. This email will provide you with links to a webpage of information that is specific to your faculty/department, and you should read this carefully before beginning the task as it provides additional information on what you need to do and how the process works.
To select your modules:
Follow the links in the email to log in to Student Records and enter the task; that allows you to select your modules.
Follow any guidelines provided by your faculty/department which will be shown within the module selection task.
The modules available for you to select will be listed in collections. Each collection will provide instructions on the number of modules/credits that you need to select from that collection.
Once you select a module, it will appear in a ‘shopping basket’ on the right-hand side of the page.
Important to know: If you’re in the IoPPN, FoLSM or Nursing (NMPC) faculties, your record is managed by your respective faculty team, and the module registration/selection process may be different to what is described for other faculties.
Standard module selection
Log in to Student Records
In the blue Module Selections box, click Select Modules for… to open the Module Registration screen. You should only see one academic year – the one for which you’re selecting your modules.
Understanding the Module Registration screen
At the top of the screen, you’ll see all modules that have been automatically added to your record (normally Core or Compulsory modules).
At the bottom of the screen on the left, you’ll see the Diet Help text. As this information will disappear from view as you scroll down the page, it’s best to open any hyperlinked pages in a new browser tab so that you can refer back to this during your selection process.
Under the Diet Help text, you’ll see each of the different sections that you need to select modules from. If there are specific instructions on selection within that section, this will be shown in the section before you expand View List (which opens up to show the full list of modules available).
The initial page can only show the first 10 options, and you may need to click on the Next option at the bottom of the list of modules to see further options.
Making your selections
Read the information at the top of each section as it’ll inform you of the minimum and/or maximum you should be selecting.
Select the module(s) you want to take, by clicking Add - the module selected will appear on the right-hand side of the screen.
Continue to add modules from the individual sections from the left-hand side of the screen until you’ve fulfilled the requirements in each section.
Once you’ve made your selections, click Submit Selections – once you’ve done this, you won’t be able to go back in and make any changes.
Searching for a module
If you have a large group of modules to choose from, the expanded View list can span many pages, or it may not show a list at all because there are too many to be listed. In this case, you can search for a module using the Module Search box available at the top of each module group block and press Add.
Changing your selections
Before you’ve submitted
You can see the result of your module selection on the right-hand side. Here, you can remove modules you’ve selected and pick an alternative by clicking the dustbin. You must then go back to the relevant section on the left-hand side to select an alternative module.
You’ll be able to see where you’ve made selections and where selections still need to be made. A green tick indicates that you’ve selected, but a red cross indicates that you’ve attempted to submit but there’s an error. If there’s neither a tick or a cross, then you haven’t selected from that section.
By clicking on the Selections from current block tab on the right-hand side, you can see the modules you’ve added from each section – from there, you can then delete and re-add a module you wish to take.
After you’ve submitted
You can’t make a change to your selection once you’ve clicked Submit Selections unless your department approves for you to have your selections reset.
Although a reset of your selections may be possible, it may not be advisable because it’ll remove all of these modules from your record (although the initial selections will still be visible to you). If there are caps on any of the modules, you may not be able to select them again as the space may have gone to another student. Also, if you forget to make module selections again, you’ll have no modules on your record.
If you change your mind once you’ve submitted, please contact your faculty/department.
Errors and warning messages
During the process of selecting your modules, or at the end when you click Submit Selection, you may receive messages from the system. These will either be due to:
specific requirements of the modules (e.g. you must have previously taken a specific module before you can take the one you’ve picked)
recommended requirements of the modules (e.g. you’re advised to have previously taken a specific module before/while you take the one you’ve picked)
you’ve selected too many or too few modules from the section, or overall
you’ve selected a module that you’ve already picked or have taken in a previous year.
You’ll need to go back and review each section on the left-hand side, looking for a red cross which indicates which section has the error. Read the information at the top of the section as it’ll tell you what you need to do.
Important to know: Once you’ve corrected the first error that has been found, all further red crosses will be removed. The way to identify any further sections that need action is to look for the sections where there is no green tick or red cross.
Sending a query/comment
Unless you’re specifically instructed to do so, please don’t select to View/Add Comments.
This function only sends a message to King’s staff who are using the Online Approval/Rejection process to approve your selections. You’ll be able to identify if your faculty/department is using this process from the webpage information provided in your emails from Student Records. If your faculty/department isn’t using this and you have a query, either send them an email or use the online enquiry form available to you in the emails from Student Records.
However, some programmes will ask you to submit supporting statements as part of your module selection. If this applies to you, use the View/Add Comments section to do so. After adding your comments, click Submit, followed by OK.
Submitting your selections
Once you’ve clicked Submit Selections, you’ll be presented with a display of the modules you’ve selected and ones that have been automatically added to your record.
You’ll also receive an email to your King’s email account confirming the selections you’ve made, including the order of preference (if your programme allows for preferential selection).
Module selection for intercalated programmes
Not all students on intercalated programmes need to select modules using the online module selection tool. Some programmes have no optional modules, or optional modules may be allocated directly by your department. If this applies to you, your email invitation will explain the process, and you won’t need to complete the online task.
If you’re required to select modules, you’ll be asked to log in to Student Records and complete your module selection by the deadline stated in your email.
Selecting modules for multiple intercalated programmes
If you have offers for multiple intercalated programmes, you’ll need to select modules for each of these programmes.
Log in to Student Records.
Select the programme that you wish to select modules for - you’ll need to do this for all intercalated programmes you’ve applied for if you’re still undecided about which one you’ll be choosing.
After clicking Select for Session, click Select Modules for (academic year).
You’ll arrive at the module registration page – make sure the Your details section is correct for your programme and read the information regarding your programme on the left-hand side before selecting your modules.
Make your selections from each block of modules.
Click on the hyperlinked module code to see a list of all the modules in that block. Find the module you wish to take and click ‘Add’. This will then appear on the Selected Modules list on the right-hand side.
After selecting your first module from the first block, go down to the next block and select your second module. Each block is separated by the word AND – please read the help text and only select the number of modules/credits it states.
A green tick the box shows that you’ve selected from that group of modules, so you need to go down to the next group of modules to select your next module.
Continue until you’ve selected modules from each block. When you’ve finished, click Submit Selections.
You’ll arrive at a page confirming that you’ve selected modules for the programme and listing the modules you chose. Log out and then log back in to Student Records to select modules for the other intercalated programmes you have offers for.
Approval and confirmation of your selections
The way your module selections are confirmed depends on your faculty.
Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine (FoLSM)
Your module selections will go through the online approval process. After submitting your choices, you’ll receive an automated email confirming your submission and a further email once your selections have been reviewed and approved. If any changes are needed, your faculty/department will contact you. For modules with limited capacity, confirmation of your place may be provided later once allocations are finalised.
All other faculties
Your selections will be reviewed by your faculty/department after submission. You’ll receive an email confirming the modules you’ve been allocated once this review has taken place.
Module selection for Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC)
If you’re a pre-registration student, you’ll be asked by your faculty team to indicate a preference on KEATS, and you’ll be allocated subject to capacity.
If you’re a post-qualification student, this registration process is done through Student Services Online.
