The Language Centre offers Language Modules that can help you broaden your education, develop valuable skills for your future career and build confidence communicating in different cultural settings.
Which languages are available to study?
Below is the list of languages available to study at the Language Centre. You can find information about each of the languages on KEATS.
Module stages
Language Modules are taught across seven stages, from Stage 1 (complete beginner) to Stage 7 (advanced). However, not all languages are available at higher stages.
You must enrol at the stage that matches your current level of language knowledge. If we can't determine your language level from the information you provide, we may ask you to complete a short online Language Level Assessment with a teacher. This helps us make sure you're placed in a class that matches your language ability.
You can't enrol on a lower stage or repeat a stage you have already completed in the same language.
Module structure
The amount of time you'll spend studying depends on the type of Language Module you choose.
Full-year modules
2 hours of teaching each week across both semesters (20 weeks in total)
Around 4–8 hours of independent study each week
One-semester modules (undergraduate students only)
4 hours of teaching each week (usually split across two sessions) for 10 weeks
Around 8–10 hours of independent study each week
Important to know: Intensive One Semester Modules aren't available to postgraduate students who want to take them For Award as part of their main programme of study. However, you can still take these modules Not For Award by paying the relevant fee. In this case, the module is studied separately from your main programme of study.
Intercultural Learning modules (undergraduate students only)
2 hours of teaching each week over 10 weeks of teaching in one semester, with a reading week in Week 6
When to apply?
Returning students can complete Early Enrolment from March each year for the following academic year.
If you're a returning student, enrolment for the 2026-27 academic year is now open. You can find the application form on KEATS.
If you're an incoming first-year student or any other student, enrolment will open in September.
Important to know: If you're required to complete Module Selection, we recommend that you do this before submitting your Language Centre application.
Adding a Language Module during Module Selection doesn't automatically enrol you on that module with the Language Centre. You'll still need to submit a Language Centre application so that we can review your previous language experience and place you in the most appropriate class.
How to apply?
If you're a returning student and would like to study a Language Module in 2026-27, you can apply by completing the 2026-27 application form on KEATS.
Once we receive your application, we’ll check to make sure that a suitable class is available and then confirm the outcome. We aim to process applications within three working days.
If you have previous experience of the language but haven't studied it through a King's Language Centre module, you'll be asked to complete an online placement test so that we can place you in the most appropriate class.
If you apply during early enrolment, you'll initially be added to a module placeholder. Once the university timetable is released in August, we'll be able to confirm whether your enrolment has been successful.
Important to know: Submitting an application doesn't guarantee a place on a module. Enrolment is subject to class availability, timetable compatibility and the date of your application.
Module eligibility
Undergraduate Students
Undergraduates For Award
If you’re an undergraduate student, you can take a Language Module For Award as part of your degree programme at no additional cost.
Before you apply, you'll need to check with your department whether the module:
can be taken as part of your 120 credits for the academic year
can contribute to your final degree classification (C-score)
can be taken in addition to your 120 credits
Important to know: From 2025/26 onwards, as per King's regulations, first-year undergraduate students cannot take modules as additional credits.
If you're only available for one semester, you can enrol on a One Semester Language Module (OSM) or the Intercultural Awareness module, provided you are available to take the assessment(s).
Undergraduates Not For Award
If you’re an undergraduate student, you can take a Language Module Not For Award (separate to your degree programme), but a fee is payable. For more information, please see the article LC: Attendance requirements, regulations and fees.
Undergraduate students at The Courtauld Institute of Art
If you’re a Courtauld student, the same eligibility applies as for Undergraduate students.

Postgraduate Students
Postgraduates For Award
If you're a postgraduate student, you may be able to take a Language Module For Award as part of your degree programme. This is subject to your programme regulations and approval from your department.
Postgraduate Language Modules are taught at Level 7 and are worth either 15 or 20 credits, depending on the module.
Before you apply, check with your department whether the module:
can count towards the 180 credits required for your programme
can be taken in addition to your required 180 credits
is permitted within your programme specification
Most Language Modules are available to postgraduate students. However, intensive One-Semester Language Modules (OSMs) and Linguistics modules are generally only available to undergraduate students.
If you'd like to take an OSM, you may be able to enrol Not For Award alongside your main programme of study and a fee will apply. For more information, see the Postgraduates Not For Award section below.
Postgraduates Not For Award
If you're a postgraduate student, you can take a Language Module Not For Award to support your research, professional development or personal interests. A fee applies to all Not For Award enrolments. For more information, please see the article LC: Attendance requirements, regulations and fees.
Postgraduates-Only modules (PG-O)

Language for Business modules (KBS)

Will I get a certificate at the end of the module?
If you take a credit-bearing Language Module, it will appear on your transcript and no separate certificate will be issued.
If you take a non-credit-bearing Language Module, you can request a certificate from the Language Centre after you have completed the module and your results have been approved by the Faculty Board.
