When do I become liable to start paying Council Tax?

If your course end date has been officially extended, you'll need to download and send a updated Confirmation of Study letter which shows your updated expected end date, to prove that your enrolment with King's has not yet ended.
 
Important to know: 

• If you've been permitted more time to submit work this is not an official extension of the course, and it will be at your Council's discretion whether or not to apply student exemption for longer.
• If you've been granted more time to complete your assessments or have deferred exams to the August session, please ask log a case and ask us to confirm these details with your department and add this information to a letter.
  • Please provide as much detail as possible about what you need and why when logging your case.
• However, the Council is not obligated by law to extend your exemption because the regulations define a student as: "You are a student from the day you begin the course until the day you complete it, abandon it or are no longer permitted by the educational institution to undertake it."

There have been a number of valuation tribunals that have looked at the issue of deferred assessments and resitting, and quite often the test is how similar to full-time study this extension period is.

Yes. If you have completed a foundation programme, first degree or masters and plan to start a new course in next academic year, your exemption from Council Tax as a student does not continue during this gap and you will need to pay the bill.

Councils usually issue a bill for the full tax year showing the amount owing from the point you become liable until 31 March the next year.

• Arrange with your council to pay monthly.
• Once you have enrolled on the new course, you can submit evidence of your student status and they will then apply your exemption again from the start of the new programme.
• Your bill for the year will be recalculated.
• You will then have a balance to pay or be issued with a refund for any over payments.
