King's uses a variety of digital tools to provide an environment of up-to-date Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). This section will outline the different tools available to you and how they should be used to enhance your study experience.
Your student email account
Email is used for communication throughout the University, and you will be allocated an email address by King’s College London (KCL). Please check your KCL email account regularly, as urgent messages from registry services, your personal tutor, or staff teaching your modules may be sent there.
Tutors, lecturers, and administrative staff will use your KCL email address and expect you to read and act promptly upon all messages. Not checking this account regularly will not be accepted as a valid reason for failing to respond. Please do not use your personal email address for communications with the University.
You can find you how to access your email for the first time in the Accessing your IT account & connecting to the King's Wi-Fi network article.
Student Services Online
Student Services Online is where you can find answers to common questions and support topics. It should be the first place you check when making an enquiry. The platform consolidates information about the services King's offers and can direct you to relevant resources.
You can read more about how to use the platform in the Using Student Services Online article.
KEATS
KEATS (King’s E-Learning and Teaching Service) is the University’s online learning environment which is used by both students and academic staff. You can use KEATS to access a wide range of online resources and materials, in the form of assessments, discussions and assignments.
You can find out how to access and use KEATS in the What software & systems do I need to know about for my studies? article
Microsoft Teams for synchronous teaching
Microsoft Teams Meetings is the recommended tool to support the delivery of online synchronous teaching sessions at King’s. Join the Viva Engage Community to discover tips and tricks about Microsoft Teams and 365 or visit the Technology Guides section in Flexible Teaching and Learning (internal KEATS module).
Essential Digital Skills programme
At King’s, we’ve developed the Essential Digital Skills Programme, a new online programme designed to help you to develop your digital skills, excel in your studies and support your personal development throughout your time at King’s.
You can find out more about the programme and how you can access it in the How can I develop my digital skills? article.
Lecture capture
King’s College London uses the Echo 360 platform to record lectures, providing a useful resource for students. Lecture capture can be used to:
- provide a study aid for revision, review difficult sections, improve the quality of notes and allow for more independent study
- accommodate different approaches to learning
- assist students who do not have English as their first language or who have particular educational needs
- improve satisfaction with your programme.
Enrol yourself in the student Lecture Capture guidance course for advice on the pedagogically appropriate use of tools, detailed how-to information and relevant case studies.
While many rooms are equipped with lecture capture facilities, not all classes will be in these locations.
LinkedIn Learning
LinkedIn Learning is an online learning platform that boasts a library of over 21,000 courses. These courses are led by industry experts and cover a range of topics from business, technology, software, and interpersonal skills.
At King’s, all students and staff have FREE access to LinkedIn Learning via their KCL Single Sign-On credentials. Whether you want to boost your employability, improve your skillset, or simply try something new, LinkedIn Learning is the perfect place to start.
You can find out more about the platform and how to access it for free in this Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning page.
King's Student app
You can access everything you need with the King’s Student app, including timetables, KEATS, email, library services and Student Records.
Find out more in the What is the King’s Student app and how do I use it? article.
Student computer rooms
Student Computer Rooms are available at each campus and in accordance with building opening times. These rooms are available for private study and are also used for classroom teaching.
The PC Free service allows you to find the nearest available student PC on campus. Check the availability of PC's in each of the Student Computer Rooms (over 1,200 PCs in over 50 rooms across campuses).
