What is exam and assessment misconduct?

Some examples of misconduct for in-person exams include: 

• Using artificial intelligence (AI) software, unless you have been explicitly permitted to do so, as this is considered third party involvement. Further information about appropriate use of AI for your studies can be found on this webpage. 
• Having unauthorised items either on you in person, or in the exam hall (apart from items placed in your bag or coat) This also includes in the toilets. 
• Cheating, attempting to cheat, or assisting another candidate to cheat, e.g., sharing answers, passing off someone else's work as your own, using social media to discuss the content of the exam with another student who has yet to take it.
• Opening the exam paper before the exam has started.
• Writing anything on the exam stationery other than the information requested (e.g., candidate number, module code, exam title) before the exam has started.
• Having writing or notes of some kind, on any part of your body or added to your clothes.
• Talking to any other students once in the exam hall, including after your exam has finished.
• Removing any used or unused answer books, exam papers, or any other exam stationery from the exam hall, even temporarily.
• Having a mobile phone that makes any noise at all during the exam, or that is not switched off when in the exam hall, or having a mobile phone on you in person at any time when in the exam hall, including the toilets.
• Leaving the hall during the first 75 minutes of the exam or during the last 15 minutes of the exam (unless you are instructed to do so).
• Continuing to write after the exam has ended.
• Ignoring or disobeying any other instructions given by an invigilator or member of the Exams, Assessments & Timetabling team.

Some examples of misconduct for remote online exams include: 

• Using artificial intelligence (AI) software, unless you have been explicitly permitted to do so, as this is considered third party involvement. Further information about appropriate use of AI for your studies can be found on this webpage. 
• Cheating, attempting to cheat, or assisting another candidate to cheat, e.g., sharing answers, passing off someone else's work as your own, using social media to discuss the exam while it is in progress.

Some examples of misconduct for other forms of assessment like coursework or written assignments include: 

• Using artificial intelligence (AI) software, unless you have been explicitly permitted to do so, as this is considered third party involvement. Further information about appropriate use of AI for your studies can be found on this webpage. 
• Cheating, attempting to cheat, or assisting another candidate to cheat, e.g., sharing answers, passing off someone else's work as your own.

Anyone either suspected of or caught committing exam and assessment misconduct will be reported to the Student Conduct & Appeals team for further investigation. Exam and assessment misconduct is taken very seriously and penalties for these offences include (but are not restricted to) suspension or expulsion from the university, failure of a module or all modules taken, or assigning the minimum mark for a module or all modules taken.
